What defines you? What are the Little things in life that trigger who you are now?
I really don’t know but one thing I’m certain: cycling has shaped profoundly who I’m.
I wouldn’t be this person without the Tour de France, and how it made some Colombian riders heroes. I grew up in the 80’s and because of that race, and the escarabajos performances. They were the actual first heroes I could relate to, humble kids who were storming La Grande Boucle giving it all. In my mind mountains started to been seeing something to be conquered.
Funny though I never got to see them, the only thing we could have were some blurry stage resumes, and in my mind, together with an even more diffuse voice over those images. What finally did the trick to inspire me was the set up: I lived surrounded by the incredible mountains my heroes trained, giving my imagination a canvas to work on those images.
That first thought, of somebody riding its bike and being able to conquer anything was the ignition of one of the most important part of my life. Lucho Herrera or Fabio Parra might never know my name, but this is the good thing about heroes not only they make extraordinary actions, they encourage you to become also better, to go beyond what you thought it could be done.
Today when I’m on my bike I’m still a 5 year old trying to do as his heroes did. And that’s a big part of me.
